The "Holy Fire" Hoax: How Science Exposed the Myth of the Alleged Miracle with White Phosphorus
Prepared by: Dr. Solomon Khalil
Scientific facts expose the falsehood of what is called the "Miracle of the Holy Fire," while historical and chemical analyses reveal the deception behind this claim. Historically centered at a single location in Jerusalem, the scientific trick behind it was unveiled to educate and simplify the concept for everyday people. The Greek professor, researcher, and historian Michael Kalopoulos dismantled this trick practically in front of millions of viewers on Greek television screens. He exposed the falsity of this ritual, putting an end to the supernatural interpretations used to exploit the emotions of believers.
The Nature of the Ritual and the Constraints of the Alleged Location:
-
The Only Claimed Time and Place: This annual ritual is limited exclusively to the "Holy Sepulchre" in Jerusalem on "Holy Saturday" (the day preceding Orthodox Easter). The Greek Orthodox Patriarch enters alone into a chamber inside the tomb, carrying bundles of unlit candles, and emerges with them lit.
-
The Role of Priests and Monks: Their role is strictly confined to receiving the flame, which is transported to them via special planes and ships from Jerusalem to various countries around the world to light their churches as part of the celebration.
Chemical Explanation and Simulating the Trick:
Chemistry is exploited to deceive and mislead everyday people through the mechanism of "spontaneous combustion" of white phosphorus. The laboratory simulation demonstrated on video by the historian and chemical developer Michael Kalopoulos provided an accurate replica of this mechanism. It proved that using a chemical solution can light any candle spontaneously—whether a regular one or one brought from the church.
This trick relies on dipping the candle wicks into a solution consisting of phosphorus dissolved in a highly volatile liquid, such as carbon disulfide.
Evaporation of the carbon disulfide and Drying of the Wick:
CS₂ (l) → CS₂ (g)
As soon as the carbon disulfide dries and evaporates after approximately 20 minutes, the white phosphorus begins to react spontaneously with the ambient oxygen in the air according to the following chemical equation:
4P + 5O₂ → 2P₂O₅
-
Release of Energy and Flash: The reaction is strongly exothermic (ΔH < 0), It produces the compound "phosphorus pentoxide," which appears as a dense white smoke clearly visible right before and during the flash of the flame.
-
Spontaneous Combustion: The sudden heat generated by this instant oxidation quickly brings the wax of the wick to its flashpoint, causing it to ignite on its own without needing an external flame source.
